The National Monopole Surveillance System (codename System 11, originally Project 856) is a covert federal system in Vekllei that searches for cosmic magnetic monopoles through massive detector arrays in Kala, the Falklands and undersea installations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The system serves as the basis for the Commonwealth’s natural monopole programme, and also conducts proper particle physics research, but the strategic value of monopoles to the MMR-III reactor programme means it is highly classified.
The primary installation occupies the Deep Site Particle Observatory in Kala, which it shares with System 12. The installation includes 50-metre superconducting coil arrays cooled to cryogenic temperatures which monitor cubic kilometres of rock for magnetic flux changes indicating monopole passage. The extreme depth helps mitigate the interference of cosmic rays. This supplements the work undertaken by undersea stations along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the harvesting operations are located, which contributes to the understanding of how newly arrived cosmic monopoles differ from ancient particles lodged in basalt.
The ASRE is currently working on a project to correlate monoopole detections with cosmic ray events, which, if confirmed, would have tremendous implications for predicting harvesting yields. Research findings feed into the NSRE’s monopole production programs and inform the theoretical models behind the Tranquility Ring. The system associates closely with the Strategic Materials Reserve, which maintains Vekllei’s monopole stockpile.
