The Commonwealth Electoral Commission (CEC) conducts elections, by-elections and referendums in the Commonwealth. It maintains the National Electoral Roll, sets electorates and apportionments, and administers the Electoral Gazette through which political candidates register and receive campaign support. The commission operates independently of the ministries whose elections it administers.
Elections in the country are frequent and diverse – the municipal assembly, republic assembly and Consilia all operate on different electoral cycles, and the commission manages all of them concurrently. Referendums, which are required for major constitutional and policy changes under the Vekllei Constitution, are administered by the commission and may occur at any time.
The commission also provides electoral supervisory services to other Commonwealth member-states and occasionally monitors foreign elections in neighbouring Caribbean nations as an independent auditor.
