The Fires Establishment administers doctrine, equipment and procurement for the field and naval artillery, strike aircraft, guided missiles, coastal and air defence, and the strategic deterrents of the Commonwealth Armed Forces, across every Division. Naval gunnery draws on the Universal Hull System, under which more than 240 vessels share four standardised hull families – Patrol, Frigate, Destroyer and Cruiser – which are reconfigurable between roles at refit rather than through new construction.
Field artillery is organic to every Manoeuvres regiment through its own Fires Company, supplemented by five dedicated Cannons Regiments for republic garrisons and militia formations. Coastal defence batteries descend from the individual fortifications of republics, consolidated under federal command after independence and later fitted with anti-ship missiles; several still occupy the same positions their gun predecessors held. The nuclear deterrent is administered under the Fires Establishment but treated in the Basic Laws as a Territorial concern; a homeland weapon rather than an expeditionary one. Command of Fires-manned formations rests with their parent Division, not the Establishment.
