The Signals Establishment administers doctrine, equipment and procurement for sensing, communication and command infrastructure across the Commonwealth Armed Forces, across every Division. In Commonwealth parlance, a Picket is a radar or wireless observation site, fixed or mobile; a Sentry combines observation by machine and by personnel, its watch organised in Vedettes – small forward-postured teams rotated through a Sentry site on a standing schedule.
Long-range radars, airships and various federal systems maintain persistent surveillance over the Atlantic and Caribbean approaches, feeding warning data to Firesand Control formations, and coordinated via the laser satellite constellation of the Fundamental Defence Communications System. Analysis of the intelligence gathered generally belongs to Noshem and Adsem, outside the Armed Forces proper. Command of Signals-manned formations rests with their parent Division, not the Establishment.
